POETRY: ‘The Sound of Thunder’

Contributed by Elijah Cole Smith, humanities major with pre-law track.

“The Sound of Thunder”

A light in the dark
A flower in the rain
A darkness so stark
A pleasure in the pain
Asleep with no meaning
Aloft with no cure
A place so forgotten
Of that I am sure
And tomorrow will rise
Along with the sun
No one is happy
No one has won
And it’s mid morning light
These thoughts
I can’t sleep
I’m kindling a blight
You sowed in me
I’ll do what I must
To get back what I can
But as for my heart
It is with a friend
I dream fine knowing
That I have lost
My mind is gone
My soul, aloft
But there is a sound
Deep within the earth
It beats of a fire
That knows of all worth
And I can’t resist
The storm and all its wonder
So remember me long
When you shiver at the sound
Of thunder
