VIDEO: Hawks show appreciation to women within UHCL community

As part of our #HawkHerStory campaign, The Signal put out a call for the UHCL community to nominate women faculty, staff, students and alumni they admire. These were some of the responses we received. This video features members of The Signal’s spring 2019 staff.

Here are a few more responses we got that not in the video.

[Dr. Elizabeth Beavers] is a diligent worker and loves to teach her students. I always feel welcomed into her classroom and I learn a lot of information regarding my major. She is also very understanding when it comes to deaths in the families. She lets you focus on the current situation and then slowly gets you back on track. She also checks up on you and makes sure that you are in the right mental area and are ready for class.

Angie [Montelongo] has been one of my role models since I met her in fall 2015. Not only is she a woman of integrity, honesty, and kindness, but Angie holds student development, education, and engagement at the highest priority. She always makes a tremendous effort to make sure that all of the programs she is involved in are student-centered. It is truly a pleasure and honor to know her!

I took Dr. Strait in Summer 18 for Adolescent Psychology. Since then, she has referred me to a mentorship program with junior high students, allowed me to join her as a research assistant in research she is conducting, and has encouraged and guided me. She has been instrumental in providing me with knowledge about options that I have open to me when it comes to continuing my education. I look up to her and am lucky to have her support.

Even before I was officially hired at UHCL, it was easy to see the strength, talent, and professionalism [Iliana Melendez] possesses. Iliana asks the tough questions and makes decisions in the best interest of students and the UHCL community as a whole. She advocates for ALL students. I appreciate her willingness to step up and support, going far above and beyond her role on campus. In short, as a strong, talented, and caring professional, it is staff like she that makes all the difference on this campus.

Kaia [Flowers] supported her husband in getting his history degree and following his dreams and now it’s her turn. She graduates Fall 2019 and puts her husband and daughter ahead of herself most of the time, but getting her bachelors degree and Masters is everything to her and shes killing it!
