INFOGRAPHIC: The inside scoop on National Ice Cream Month

The U.S. Congress passed “Senate Joint Resolution 298” dubbing “July as National Ice Cream Month” and July 21 as “National Ice Cream Day” in 1984. Once a confection for the elite of America, with records tracing some of the ‘Founding Fathers” enjoying the dessert, is now an affordable treat one tends to enjoy in the hottest months of the year.

The origin of the beloved dessert is found both in the Shang Dynasty (618-97 BCE) and later as a favorite of Greece’s Alexander the Great. Though King Tang of Shang did have buffalo’s milk, both records included a version more similar to today’s sorbet made with ice rather than the cream of today and sweet nectar.
