MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT: Dr. Blake’s statement on the recent events in Atlanta

Dear Hawks,

Yesterday I spent an hour with students, alumni, faculty, administrators, and elected officials discussing the future of University of Houston-Clear Lake. We had an opportunity to clearly state all that we value and how we view our university. I spoke of the common threads we share; threads of different colors, and origins that, when woven together, create a beautiful tapestry that is representative of our university. A tapestry of diversity and inclusion.

As I listened to our honored guests speak eloquently regarding their hopes, dreams and concerns, the tragedy that took place in Atlanta the day before continued to weigh upon my mind. While dismayed that our country continues to reel from events that highlight social injustices, my resolve only intensifies to ensure that collectively we continue to celebrate what makes us representative of the very best a university can be.

We are here to support you as we all work through these challenging times.

I encourage you to access the UH-Clear Lake Statement on Diversity and Inclusion. This statement is at the heart of who we are and what we believe. Within it we clearly and proudly assert:

“UHCL embraces inclusion and cultivates diversity at all levels of the institution. We welcome students, staff, faculty, and partners of different nationalities, races, ethnicities, ages, religions, gender identities and expressions, sexual orientations, and physical and mental abilities into our family.”

Let us commit ourselves to the belief that it is diversity, equity, and inclusion that make us strong, and let us make sure that this continues to be an indelible mark of the Hawk Way.

Sincerely,

Ira K. Blake, Ph.D.
President
