BRIEF: Orientation and New Student Programs wins award

The National Association for Orientation, Transition and Retention in Higher Education (NADO) awarded UHCL’s Office of Orientation and New Student Programs (ONSP) with “Most Innovative” for their Summer 2020 series “Hangin’ with a Hawk” at the 2021 Region IV & V Conference.

Hangin’ with a Hawk” consists of themed information sessions like “Major Monday,” “Taco Tuesday,” “Wellness Wednesday,” “Thursday Lunch and Learn” and “Faculty Friday.” The 49 live sessions initially had low attendance, but since then, the video series reached over 5000 views on Facebook.

The director of ONSP, Angie Montelongo, said she was very proud of the student orientation leaders and the ONSP team.

It felt great to be recognized by our peers who valued the creativity we put into a program that was intentionally designed to introduce new students to resources, services and current students on campus,” said Montelongo.

“We built ‘Hangin’ with a Hawk’ to fill a gap and our Orientation Leaders delivered the program in the best way!
