MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT: UHCL Spring Semester Soft Opening

January 7, 2022

Dear Hawk Community,

Happy New Year! I hope you and your families are safe and healthy. As we prepare for the start of the Spring semester, here is an important update regarding the university’s plans in response to the significant rise in cases of COVID-19 due to the omicron variant.

Spring Classes
After careful consideration, we have decided to implement a soft opening for classes. Spring classes will begin, as scheduled, on Tuesday, January 18th. However, to promote the health and safety of the entire UH-Clear Lake community, professors may change the format for the first two weeks of the semester (January 18-30). Provost Maynard will follow up with more specific instructions to faculty and students in another communication.

Operations, Student Services and Events
During this time, our campus offices, particularly student facing services, will remain operational with services offered in-person and virtually to assist and prepare you for the upcoming semester. The determination of staffing needs and work arrangements will be at the discretion of Division Vice Presidents. In addition, all on-campus events, such as our orientation and new student programs, will continue as planned.

Residence Halls
Hunter Hall will open for move-in as planned. Additional information will follow in a direct email to students from Student Housing and Residential Life.

COVID Protocols
We will follow current CDC Guidelines regarding isolation and quarantining in the case of a positive test, potential exposure or if you are experiencing COVID symptoms. Information about UH-Clear Lake’s health and safety protocols, reporting a positive COVID-19 test result or potential exposure, and preventive strategies can be found on our ‘Stay Healthy, Hawks’ website.

Let us all continue to do our part to keep Hawks safe and healthy. The omicron variant is yet another challenge, but I know that we can navigate through it if we all pull together as we have before. Prevention remains our best option: get vaccinated, get boosted, wear a mask, and self-report. Thank you for doing your part.

Sincerely,

Richard Walker, Ed.D.
Interim President
