Art Gallery exhibits UHCL’s history in the arts

The Art Gallery is back with a new exhibit displaying works from the UHCL art collection, curated by Karen Fiscus who has 21 years of experience as exhibition coordinator. The exhibit features many different works including paintings, fabric art and a time capsule of posters from previous exhibits on campus.

After previously showcasing an exhibit for Instantaneous Beauty: Andy Warhol and the photographic process that featured a polaroid camera owned by Warhol that ended in June, it was no time before the Art Gallery was back with another summer exhibit, this time closely related to the campus and its history of involvement with the arts.

Some highlights include an art exhibit poster from 1979 featuring the works of Texas native and modernist painter Dorothy Hood, a striking oil painting done by former UHCL professor William Anzalone entitled “Two bathers,” and an entire wall and corner dedicated to Judy Chicago and her works that have been displayed at the university.

“The university, UH/CLC at the time, was a little rebellious for displaying such a risqué art piece as The Dinner Party in 1980 but it was a massive achievement for the Houston arts community,” Fiscus said.

Director of Theater and Cultural Arts Eric Despard teased many upcoming projects for both the Art Gallery and The Bayou Theater.

“We have a full slate and a lot of very exciting things happening on campus,” Despard said. “Students who are interested in the upcoming schedule can even pick up a brochure while inside the Bayou Building on the second floor.”

The gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and will be on display until August 19. In September, the gallery will open the next exhibit entitled “Counterparts.” In November, they will host a collaboration between the Art Gallery and the Bayou Theater with an international film festival on Sustainable Stories that will include displays in the gallery and screenings in the theater.
