COMMUNITY UPDATES: Catalytic Converter Thefts in Parking Lot D

The following was sent as a bulletin from UHCL Police Department.

Community Safety Bulletin 2023-001
Catalytic Converter Thefts

Date: January 25, 2023

The UHCL Police Department is currently investigating a series of catalytic converter thefts in Lot D
on the UHCL campus. These type thefts occur when a person removes the catalytic converter device
from a vehicle’s undercarriage near the engine. In most instances, the suspect vehicle parks near or
beside a target vehicle, a person discretely goes beneath the target vehicle, removes the catalytic
converter, then returns to and departs in the suspect vehicle.

Victims later find their vehicle engine is unusually loud and, upon inspection, learn their catalytic
converter is missing.

In a recent event, the suspect vehicle is described as a late model, black in color Mercedes Benz sedan.

Safety Tips
If you see someone laying on the ground beneath a vehicle in a parking lot, do not approach;

call UHCL PD at 281-283-2222, or use the
SafeZone app to report.
Watch for occupants of vehicles parked near or beside
the vehicle in question; any of these vehicles might be
involved.

Be a good witness; if you see this type of activity,
make note of vehicle and individual descriptions,
including the suspect vehicle license plate.

It takes all of us to promote a safe environment. I
encourage everyone to download the
SafeZone app, a
free to use, campus-focused safety program for
UHCL.
