Throw Ups and Touchdowns: A day at a UH football game

September 23rd, UH Main Campus invited us at UH Clear Lake to support the Cougar football team’s battle against the Sam Houston State Bearcats. Since UHCL lacks any sports on campus many students jumped at the opportunity to receive two free tickets to the game.  Allowing many at UHCL to participate in the festivities centered around TDECU Stadium and the religion that is college football in Texas.

The Preparation

As a previous Main Campus student, I was already equipped with clothes for the sea of scarlet red that would be waiting inside the TDECU Stadium. As for the true Hawks in my group, they would have to get their first UH shirts to fully embrace the Coog spirit. After the crew was assembled and the tailgate supplies gathered, we began our 40-minute journey to the historic Third Ward district of Houston.

The Tailgate

Walking up to the tailgate tents in front of TDECU Stadium the overwhelming cougar spirit could be felt in the air and was showcased by the countless students wearing red and white. The carnival-like atmosphere of the tailgate is hosted by organizations across the UH campus, all with the same goal of seeing who can have the most fun getting hyped for the ensuing UH college football kickoff. As a group of UHCL students who wanted to get the full college football experience we had no choice but to participate in the festival in front of us for the Houston Cougars

The Game

The effect of UH’s major move to the Big XII Conference can be felt immediately after crossing the gates into TDECU Stadium and seeing the crowded stands. With UH playing the role of host to us at UHCL, the Cougars made sure the game was going to be exciting. After UH quarterback Donovan Smith threw plenty of touchdowns. It was time for throw-ups. The most exciting part of the game came when Reuben Unije became a viral star for throwing up mid-game and then pancaking the defender who came at him the same play.
