Mexico for Spring Break is NOT the way to go

Spring Break is finally here! It’s time to sit back, kick up your feet, get your tan on and take your mind off of school for a few days. Many students take advantage of the weeklong break and pack their bags for a much needed vacation with friends or family. Before you head for the border, please take into account the possible dangers that wait on the other side of the Rio.

In the last two months, the Texas Department of Public Safety has issued at least two warnings regarding travel to Mexico due to continued violence. In January, a Texas missionary was shot and killed as she and her husband tried to escape a gang of violent men. Two other men were also killed in separate events in October. Drug cartels have taken over parts of Mexico and it’s just simply not a safe place to visit right now.

I think this is a sad situation because I know many people who love going to Mexico. Rates are decently priced and if you get a group together, you won’t have to sell your left leg to afford the adventure. Places like Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco are absolutely BEAUTIFUL and do their best to cater to tourists, but I still wouldn’t risk it.

If you are set on traveling, why not opt for Florida instead? South Beach, Miami Beach, Panama City Beach and West Palm Beach all offer an active night life. Gulf Shores, Alabama also has great views and hot spots for college students.
