Recreation and Wellness Center hosts training certification classes

UHCL’s Recreation and Wellness Center is hosting several training certification workshops throughout spring and summer in association with NETA, a non-profit fitness professional association, and YogaFit, the largest yoga teacher training and yoga certification program in the world.

The first is a Group Exercise Certification course on Saturday, February 29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., where instructors can learn the fundamentals of teaching group exercise and registration includes a full-day review, a written exam and 2-year certification. The second, on March 1 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., is Kettlebell Speciality, which certifies strength training and popular exercises with kettlebells including “safety techniques, body positioning, alignment, and appropriate starting weights.”

On March 28-29, Hawks can get certified for YogaFit Level 2 training, those interested can register online. Level 1 certification is not required to take this course, but it is encouraged.

“YogaFit is a small, female-owned company that emphasizes sports science, alignment and traditional yoga,” said Kelsey Daviglus, a graduate assistant from the Recreation and Wellness Center. “It [the workshop] is open to aspiring and returning yoga instructors that want to progress themselves in the world of yoga.”

There are a couple more courses coming up this summer, like the Pilates Specialty certification workshop on June 20-21. It’s a starter-level training course for prospective Pilates instructors to “learn the ABC’S of Pilates principles: alignment, breathing, control and stability.” Also, there is a discounted fee if registered before May 21.

Finally, Hawks can become a certified personal trainer by signing up for the Personal Trainer workshop on August 18-19th and learn the necessary communication skills and exercise programming and receive a two-year certificate accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). The discounted fee applies if registered before June 18.

“Before I first started teaching Group Fitness, I was shy and quiet;” Daviglus said.  “As soon as I started teaching, I was able to come out of my shell and actually enjoy being in front of people. I personally went through the NETA Personal Training Certification Course last year and it was wonderful!”

To register for any of the NETA courses call 800-237-6242 or go online to www.netafit.org. All workshops are open to everyone, including community members, and will take place in the Recreation and Wellness Center.
