GALLERY: Thousands gather for Juneteenth in Emancipation Park

Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated June 19 that recognizes the end of slavery in U.S. The day originated in Galveston, Texas when Union General Gordon Granger announced to local slaves that they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This year a host of events happened all across the nation and in the Houston area, including a celebration at Emancipation Park in Third Ward.
