Joe Contreras elected as new Student Government President

Student Government (SG) announced Joe Contreras as their newly elected SG President at the SG General assembly meeting Aug. 8. Contreras defeated SG Vice President of Outreach and Communication Nancy Arellano in a second election after the previously elected SG President Nicholas Parrott stepped down.

Student Government President Nicholas Parrott stepped down from his position June 6.

“We serve as the voice,” Contreras said. “We are their voice and extended their concerns to our administration.”

Contreras has served as an orientation leader since spring 2020.

“Something that I am very passionate about is the concern students have of accessibility on campus,” Contreras said. “Our ADA buttons are sometimes out of order and take a while to fix. A lot of the restrooms on campus are not accessible, the Bayou Building has a lot of accessibility issues, that’s really my biggest concern right now and something that I’m working hard to do right now.”

Arellano and Contreras were the only candidates for SG President. Voting began July 27 and ended Aug. 3, 2022.

SG General assembly meetings will be every Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in the SSCB Lecture Hall or via Zoom during the 2022 fall semester.

“Please come to our meetings,” Contreras said. “We want to make a beneficial change to enhance the student experience here. If we don’t have student concerns, if we don’t get to talk to students during our meetings, we can’t voice their opinion to administration.”
