UHCL’s Intercultural & International Student Services (IISS) and the School of Human Sciences and Humanities are celebrating Native American Heritage Month by bringing speaker Linda Sue Warner to campus Wednesday, Nov. 28, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Bayou Garden Room. Warner is the special assistant to the president on tribal affairs at Northeastern A&M in Miami, Okla. and a member of the Comanche Tribe.

Warner will review American Indian tribal perspectives of leadership that are linked to traditional homelands. By the 1880s, American Indian tribes in the continental U.S. had been removed to reservations and the Indian Wars had come to an end. The adoption of new homelands dramatically influenced the cultures and practices of these tribes, including contemporary leadership practices by linking ceremony to place; these sacred places are a testament to the resiliency of indigenous cultures. Warner’s presentation will highlight those sacred places that foster, maintain and support leadership behaviors in tribal leaders in the U.S.

A panel art display entitled “Native American Artistic and Expressive Traditions” will be available throughout the month of November in Bayou Atrium 1, Level 1. The display was created by students from the Native American Indigenous Peoples course taught by Maria Curtis, assistant professor of anthropology and cross-cultural studies.
