Eat, learn, mingle during ‘Small Talk. Big Ideas.’ breakfast

Discover the path to success, how to survive an ever-changing work place or how to find success in your small business during the annual “Small Talk. Big Ideas.” breakfast hosted by the UHCL Alumni Association Wednesday, April 10, 7–9 a.m. The event features 10 experts leading conversations over breakfast in the Bayou Building Garden Room, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston 77058.

“Our experts, including professors and alumni who have gained recognition in their different fields of studies, will cover a wide range of topics,” said UHCL Coordinator of Special Events Kris Thompson. “Guests will have plenty of choices to suit their individual needs.”

Topics for the breakfast include the following:

  • Come Fly With Me: Beyond the Pan Am Adventures – UHCL Assistant Dean of Student Diversity Linda Bullock recalls her days as Pan Am flight attendant and shares how courage, determination and a sense of adventure lead to rewards that come from a life lived fearlessly.
  • Breaking the Cycle: Raising Children to Reject the Violence – UHCL Associate Professor of Criminology Everette Penn discusses shares his experiences with at-risk youths to help break the cycles of violence.
  • Adapting Your Path to Success – Human resources management and organizational learning consultant and UHCL alumna Estella Hernández Gillette will show attendees how setting goals can help make things happen.
  • Asleep at Work: Surviving the Ever-Changing Workplace – Led by UHCL alumnus and author Shawn McCann, the session will show how to resolve complex professional dilemmas by approaching solutions from personal core values and truths.
  • A Balancing Act: You Can Do It! – UHCL Distinguished Alumna and retired Clear Creek Independent School District Superintendent Sandra Mossman shares her tips for creating a balance between a healthy private life and busy work world.
  • Mega-Churches, Methodists and Muslims: New Trends in American Religion – UHCL Associate Professor of Sociology and Cross Cultural Studies Mike McMullen looks at what role mega-churches play in American religion.
  • The Myths of Serial Murder – Explore the myths of serial killers as well as their ability to elude police from author and UHCL Associate Professor of Criminology Steven Egger.
  • Lessons Learned: The Real Truth about Public Education – UHCL Distinguished Alumnus and Clear Creek Independent School District Superintendent Greg Smith offers a look at 30 years of public education and what the future holds for public education in Texas.
  • History in the Making: UHCL’s First Freshman Class – UHCL will welcome freshmen for the first time in its 38-year existence and President William A. Staples discusses this historic move forward.
  • How To: The Sweet Success of Your Small Business – Take the first step in opening a small business with inspiration and insight from UHCL alumna and Cosmo’s Bakery & Deli owner Nina Valverde.
