Why I’m not doing anything for spring break

Spring break is here, and college students are ready to go to the beach, go back to their hometown to be with their families and/or just have a fun time. For me, I will use the time to do nothing and relax during the break. Spring break can be spent doing a lot of things, but doing nothing is actually doing something for my mind and my body.

We live in a world where everything comes fast. We want to get to places faster, we want the fastest internet, and we want to finish our semester fast. Spring break is really the only chance during the semester where I can just stop, take a breather and slow down for a moment. With no classes, it’s the perfect opportunity to kick back and just take my daily life obligations at a nice pace.

I plan on putting all my assignments to the side during spring break and not even worrying about them. I need this time for myself to just breathe and be ready for the remainder of the semester.

This is my last semester, and I view it as a long basketball season. The school year begins in the fall and doesn’t end until the next spring, the same as a basketball season. National Basketball Association (NBA) players get a nice week off called the All-Star break that happens right at the halfway point of the season in the third week of February. Players who aren’t selected in the All-Star Game tend to just take it as a week off and relax their mind and body for the second half of the season.

The ultimate goal for NBA players is to win a championship in June. My ultimate goal is to receive my diploma at graduation in May. Just like the basketball players, I’m in it for the long haul.

Yes, vacationing is fun. Hanging out with friends and doing some crazy MTV Spring Break party would be memorable, but once spring break is over my body and mind would need another vacation from all that energy being exerted. There is a popular saying about going on holiday, “I need a vacation from my vacation.” Unfortunately, there is no time for a second vacation and certainly not after coming back from spring break.

With projects, exams and finals coming to a close once spring break is over, it’s just a race to the finish line, and I’m going to need everything I have in me to finish on top.

That’s why I’m not doing anything for spring break. I want to just enjoy my days off from school and hopefully from my internship too. Thankfully my parents, who are also my boss, gave me the week off to enjoy it with friends and my girlfriend, but other than a date or two, I will just lay back and relax and enjoy some movies. The finish line is close, and slow and steady wins the race.
