University of Houston-Clear Lake’s (UHCL) Campus Activities Board (CAB) is hosting “Halloween Happenings” Oct. 31. “Halloween Happenings” will offer a variety of festive activities including Halloween Day Spooktacular, an Escape Room and a screening of “It.”

The Halloween Day Spooktacular festival will take place from noon to 4 p.m. in Atrium I of the Bayou Building. All UHCL student organizations have been invited to participate by providing a Halloween-themed activity for guests to enjoy. There will be craft-making, musical chairs and costume contests among other activities.

Guests are encouraged to dress in their spookiest and most creative Halloween costume for a chance to win a $25 gift card. Categories include scariest, most creative, funniest and best overall.

“There are multiple categories for the costume contest, so more than one student will be a winner,” said Jessica Kunzat, vice president of Student Government Association and a member of CAB.

Student organizations will provide food and refreshments and CAB will provide popcorn. Family and friends are invited to stop by and experience the festivities free of charge.

“Our event activities and food are always free for students,” Kunzat said.

The Escape Room will be based on Stephen King’s “It.” This event will take place in the Neumann Library from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Players will have approximately 25 minutes to solve various puzzles and escape the room before Pennywise arrives.

“I am most excited about the Escape Room because my team and I have worked really hard on making the experience as interactive and exciting as possible,” said Natalia Marfil, president of CAB. “It will be a really fun experience for everyone.”

Kunzat is also most looking forward to the Escape Room.

“I am a little biased, however, because I am helping to plan it out,” Kunzat said. “I haven’t had the chance to help work on an event quite like this before, so I am excited to see how it turns out. Also, it’s really awesome that we have the opportunity to work with the library, and we are really excited about that!”

Following the Escape Room, the 2017 version of the film “It” will be shown in the Garden Room from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Kunzat stated that she saw the movie for the first time earlier this month.

“I wouldn’t say that I’m terrified of clowns, but I’m certainly not a fan,” Kunzat said. “Watching the movie for the first time recently definitely did not make me like clowns any more than I did though!”

This will be the first Halloween festival to be held at UHCL, and CAB is striving to make the event a success. CAB hopes to bring back another fun-filled festival next year.

“We always try to gauge student interest in CAB, so it’s possible this event could be done again, or next year’s CAB could come up with something even better,” Kunzat said. “CAB is a constantly growing and changing organization. We do our best to keep what the students want in mind, but we are always interested in hearing more from the student population and gaining new members who want to be a part of the process. We have a great time in CAB and look forward to many years of this organization growing on campus!”

Student organization members hope to see guests arrive in their best costumes, see some new faces and have some laughs.

“Being college students, we don’t really have the time to go out and do ‘Halloween’ things,” Kunzat said. “I think people will be excited about the opportunity to have some Halloween fun while at school.”
