Family Weekend to include 30th annual Chili Cook-off, ‘Willy Wonka’ performances

UHCL's Family Weekend takes place first weekend in April.

This weekend, students have the opportunity to spend quality time with family without even leaving campus during UHCL’s 3rd Annual Family Weekend. Taking place on April 5 and 6, Family Weekend consists of several events that provide an opportunity for students to show their loved ones around campus. This weekend’s festivities are organized by the Office of Orientation and New Student Programs (ONSP), and those interested in attending can RSVP here.

This year’s Family Weekend includes performances of “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka,” a first-time collaboration by our own Bayou Theater and the Bay Area Houston Ballet and Theatre.

“We are very excited about this production, and it is coming together very well,” said Bayou Theater Managing Director Alex Malone. “Both companies are deeply involved with the entire scope of the work, from lighting and costumes to choreography and marketing.”

This musical adaptation of the classic book by Roald Dahl is appropriate for all ages. Ticket information can be found here. The show will run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.

Another attraction this weekend is UHCL’s 30th annual Chili Cook-off. Friends and family are invited to join students and faculty to taste different chili recipes and vote for their favorite.

There are nine cook-off teams this year, including Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the UHCL Police Department, Career Services, and a combination team consisting of The Signal and Orientation and New Student Programs. There will also be lots of activities for kids at the Cook-off, such as a bounce house, obstacle courses, and a rock wall. Not only is the cook-off a big part of Family Weekend it also marks another special occasion.

“It’s Hunter [the Hawk’s] birthday,” said the coordinator of Student Life for Organizations & Activities Dillon Nash. “He’s turning six years old.”

Additionally, those who buy a tasting kit for $5 can also buy a t-shirt for $5. The Chili Cook-off will be on Saturday, April 6 from 12 to 4 p.m. outside of the Recreation Center.

While on campus for Family Weekend, be sure to drop by the Recreation and Wellness Center and take the folks on a tour during Open House and, while there, take a look at the smoothie bar and the rec center’s new facilities and equipment.

Family Weekend also includes bingo (there will be prizes!) and Casino Night, which is sponsored by the Campus Activities Board and will be in the Garden Room in the Bayou Building. Invite some special guests to come and experience the campus, free food, and a world of pure imagination.
