CBD infused food and beverages raises conversation in Houston with new coffee shop opening

CBD coffee shops are opening doors all across Texas,  serving beverages and food infused with the super-trendy, cannabis-derived compound CBD. Suddenly, CBD is everywhere.

CBD, short for cannabidiol, a non-psychotropic component of cannabis and hemp, is being promoted as the latest miracle cure. Enthusiasts rave about its purported anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory and antidepressant effect. The new craze has made its way to Houston and is becoming available in a variety of forms.

From beverages to food, CBD is wildly popular and is easily available online, in stores and now coffee shops. The Brightfield Group, a cannabis market research firm reports that sales of the oil should reach $22 billion by 2022.

People take or apply cannabidiol CBD to treat a variety of symptoms, but its use is controversial. There is some confusion about what it is and how it affects the human body. Until recently, the best-known compound in cannabis was delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

This is the most active ingredient in marijuana. Marijuana contains both THC and CBD, and these compounds have different effects. THC creates a mind-altering “high” when a person smokes it or uses it in cooking. CBD is different. Unlike THC, it is not psychoactive. This means that CBD does not change a person’s state of mind. However, CBD does appear to produce significant changes in the body, and research suggests that it has medical benefits.

CBD-based products come in many forms. Some can be mixed into different foods or drinks and that is exactly what The Smoking Pot has done. The new hangout in Houston’s Spring Branch opened its doors this month with a rush of excited customers. The new coffee shop offers not just coffee, but also everything from topical ointments to bread, popsicles and more, all infused with CBD oil.

However, the driving force of CBD is not just to try something new and trendy. The non-intoxicating marijuana extract is being credited with helping treat a host of medical problems such as chronic pain, anxiety and sleep disorders.

When it comes to adding CBD to coffee, the main risk is that everybody’s body responds to compounds differently. The effects of CBD varies from person to person and the varying amount in different blends and grounds can alter this. To help reduce this risk, Medical News recommends users experiment with a few cups to find the right fit for your body and continue using that amount.

Although CBD coffee shops have started opening up all across Houston, it will be interesting to see if they remain open. The Food and Drug Administration bans the sale of food and drinks containing CBD regardless of THC content. However, since the passage of the Farm Bill to legalize hemp production last year, federal and state governments have not been actively prosecuting, so business owners seem to be willing to take the risk of opening and selling CBD products.

As CBD becomes a more mainstream helper for the modern world’s stress, anxiety, aging, and overload, businesses will keep finding ways to profit by inputting it into customers natural routine. CBD coffee is no different. It’s taking a regular habit of a majority of people, adding an element of daily health and waiting for new laws to catch up with public demands.
