COLUMN: Don’t be ‘that’ person, why you should not spoil a movie

Movies, TV episodes, performances, anything with a climax and ending should not be spoiled. The evening “Avengers: Endgame” premiered, the Internet, specifically social media, was full of spoilers. It was the same when it came to “Game of Thrones” season eight premiere. The only way one could avoid spoilers was to avoid the Internet — which is impossible in the 21st century.

Just to be clear, memes that elude to what took place in the movie/episode count as spoilers as well. I would include examples, but that would only contribute to the problem. Those of you posting spoilers know who you are.

People think “It’s been a week, if they have not seen the movie/episode by now, then it’s not my fault if I spoil it for them.” So?! People have lives and cannot always watch a movie/episode when it premieres, or they may not be able to financially afford to see it.

“Game of Thrones” is only aired on HBO, which is a premium cable channel that is offered on a monthly subscription. If you are not a subscriber, then you either have to make friends fast with someone who is or wait for the season to be released, hopefully before you already know how it ends.

People do not deserve to have a movie/episode spoiled. It ruins the whole movie. No one wants to pay to see something that has already been spoiled any more than you would want to eat food that has already been chewed.

It removes the flavor and completely changes the experience of eating. Likewise, when people watch a movie/episode that has been spoiled for them, it is not enjoyable as the whole experience has changed.

When a film or show is so good you feel the need to talk about it and share your experience, reach out to friends whom you know have already watched the show, in a direct or private group message. Join a group forum specifically for people on the same level as you. Or, if you feel you must absolutely post it on your social media page where everybody can see, give a spoiler alert notice upfront.

Be courteous to your friends and family who have all intentions of enjoying the show as well. Do not spoil the movie or episode. Do not be the person that everybody hates.
