POETRY: Deanna Durbin

Contributed by Kate Gaddis, UHCL alumna

Deanna Durbin was an actress and singer during the golden age of Hollywood. She was known for her golden operatic voice and her beautiful complexion.
Deanna Durbin made 21 films in all and was only in Hollywood for a short time.
She meant the world to millions of people, including myself.

Deanna Durbin was a favorite actress of mine and for a while, I wanted to write a poetry book on her. I’ve always been fascinated by the actress and always wanted to see it from her point of view.

As an autistic woman, I am always wondering how I could honor this woman in every way possible. I thought that poetry would be a great way to honor her.

When I started this, it was over a year ago and I began to write poems down and then placing her photo behind them. I created these poems with an app called unfold, and it really looked amazing when I created these poems with her photos in the back. All the photos that I used are part of a collection that I started back in 2018, and it’s growing!

With Deanna Durbin meaning so much to me, I wanted to honor her in this way. I think it’s pretty interesting since no one has written poetry about her, so I think I would honor her this way.

To learn more about it, there is more information on my blog ayoungauthorsnotebook.wordpress.com.
