BRIEF: Library and OSDEI host book club for the summer and fall

UHCL’s Neumann Library and Office of Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is hosting a book club open to students, faculty and staff. The club, titled the “Read & Reflect Book Club” is intended to open the door for conversations about differing perspectives.

The club, which starts July 22 and is expected to continue through the fall, will focus on exploring issues of diversity, equity, inclusion and racial justice to provide a relevant and timely avenue for discussion about the systematic racism impacting Black communities with the recent events surrounding George Floyd’s murder.

Instead of choosing a single book to read, participants are encouraged to choose any book that explores a different perspective. These different perspectives can be in terms of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability or other differences.

Those interested can sign up at the event’s webpage on the library website.

There will be multiple meetings throughout the summer and fall, but the two confirmed meeting dates are Wednesday, July 22 at 12 p.m. and Wednesday August 12 at 12 p.m.

“The goal of the Read & Reflect Book Club is to offer the UHCL community opportunities to learn, connect, and share with one another about lived experiences and new perspectives related to the concepts explored by the books chosen by the participants,” the club’s guidelines say. “We are committed to providing a friendly, safe, and welcoming environment for all, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ability, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age and religion (or lack thereof).”

The club’s web page also says it hopes to offer all participants an optimum environment to learn, share and connect.
