MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT: Passing of Dr. Nolie Mayo

Dear UHCL Community:

With much sadness, I share news of the passing of Dr. Nolie Mayo, Associate Professor Emerita in the College of Education, who served the university with great honor and distinction in many roles during her 24-year tenure at UH-Clear Lake. She was passionate about education and inspired students to strive to achieve their educational dreams. Dr. Mayo was instrumental in establishing the College of Education at UH-Clear Lake, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses. In addition, she held many faculty leadership positions, serving as Program Director, Interim Associate Dean and as Chair and Chair-elect of the university faculty senate.

An advocate for all students, Dr. Mayo established the Nolie Mayo 8-12 Teacher Education Scholarship Endowment. She also developed programs aimed at young girls who were deemed to be at risk and volunteered at local public schools.

Visitation for Dr. Mayo will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, August 27, at Crowder Funeral Home, 111 E. Medical Center Blvd., Webster, Texas 77598. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 28 at 11:00 a.m. at Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 16335 El Camino Real, Houston, Texas 77062. Her burial will follow the services at Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster, Texas.

I extend my condolences to the Mayo family and all who knew and loved her. Dr. Mayo’s involvement, care, and support of UH-Clear Lake has set a standard to which all should aspire.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the “Nolie Mayo 8-12 Teacher Education Scholarship Endowment.”

Sincerely,

Ira K. Blake, Ph.D.
President
