Day of Service Seeks Volunteers

The following is a press release from the Office of Communications

UH-Clear Lake invites the community to lend a helping hand at the annual Day of Service March 2. A special kick-off reception will be held March 1, 6 – 8 p.m., in the university’s Bayou Building, Forest Room, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston, 77058.

“The service day is designed to encourage participants to think more purposely about the service they engage in, to connect with the “bigger picture” and to inspire them to get more involved in the community,” says Assistant Director of Student Life Jennifer Clark.

UH-Clear Lake’s Student Leadership, Involvement and Community Engagement program sponsors the program as part of its community outreach activities. Students, faculty, alumni and community friends are invited to participate.

The Collective Power of One – International founder and President Dr. Sathya Kalangi will offer the keynote address at the kick-off reception. Day of Service helps volunteers understand the service they provide to the local community, as well as develop skills crucial to the success and lasting impression of their volunteerism.  Participants will receive a SLICE t-shirt and reflection journal.

Last year, 182 university students along with family and friends to work on 11 community projects on the Day of Service, says Clark.

Nonprofits organizations receiving assistance in recent years include Baytown Habitat for Humanity, Houston Food Bank, Houston Area Women’s Center, Krause Children’s Center, Moody Gardens, Hope Village and more.

Pre-registration is required for volunteers.  Participation times and locations will vary according to project. All volunteers must be 18 years or older.
