UHCL welcomes distinguished guest for talk on equality

University of Houston-Clear Lake President William A. Staples welcomes the University of Michigan Sandra Schwartz Tangri Distinguished University Professor of Psychology and Women’s Studies Abigail Stewart to consult with the university about the promotion of women and faculty and staff of color to leadership roles at UHCL.

In addition to her valuable consultations, Stewart will be honored at a reception Feb. 25, 5:30 p.m., in the university’s Garden Room, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. She will present “Advancing Women and Faculty of Color: Lessons Learned from Institutional Transformation Efforts.”

“We are pleased to bring such an esteemed scholar in her field to our university,” says Staples. “Presentations such as these are instrumental to the continued professional development of our faculty and staff and strengthens the university’s educational base.”

Stewart received her doctorate in personality psychology from Harvard University in 1975 and has since been the recipient of many awards including the Julia Lockwood Award, the Sarah Goddard Power Award, the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund Award from the American Association of University Women and the American Psychological Association Committee on Women in Psychology Distinguished Leadership Award, along with many others. She currently serves as the associate dean of the graduate school at the University of Michigan and is the director of the ADVANCE program, a program that focuses on the promoting institutional transformation with respect to women and faculty of color in all fields.

“Dr. Stewart is a respected scholar in women and intersectional studies and I’m incredibly excited about having her make a presentation at UHCL and pleased that Dr. Staples has extended this invitation,” says UHCL Professor of Psychology Sharon Hall. “Dr. Stewart’s research concerns the nature of unconscious bias and how it may affect marginalization or exclusion of some groups in science.”

All are welcome to attend the presentation and reception. Stewart’s visit and presentation are sponsored by the Office of the President, School of Human Sciences and Humanities, School of Education and Women’s Studies program.
