UHCL’s Capt. Wendell M. Wilson Office of Veteran Services will be hosting a seminar to discuss the latest research in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury and veteran suicide prevention. All faculty and staff are invited to join us as we examine the best support services we can provide to our veteran student body as they balance their pursuit for higher education while struggling with PTSD and TBI. The Department of Veteran Affairs’ data indicates that an average of 22 veterans commit suicide per day.
Guest speakers consist of Kathleen Molitor, Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center Suicide Prevention Center and Dr. Harvey Levin, Baylor College of Medicine. Join us and learn more about how we may best serve the men and women who have served this great nation.
Information About the Speakers
Kathleen MolitorKathy Molitor is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has served as a Suicide Prevention Coordinator (SPC) at Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center for the last 6 years. She and two co-workers coordinate and facilitate the implementation of suicide prevention strategies through education, consultation, monitoring, and outreach activities. Suicide Prevention Coordinators function as advisors to facility leadership, program managers, and staff concerning suicide prevention strategies for individual patients, for the facility and veteran community as a whole. Kathy has worked as a social worker at the VA for 18 years. Prior to her suicide prevention role, she worked as a medical social worker with a passion for work with HIV patients, and veterans and families facing terminal illnesses. |
Dr. Harvey LevinDr. Levin is Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Baylor College of Medicine. He is also a Research Scientist at the Michael E. De Bakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Houston. Dr. Levin is a partnering principal investigator (PI) with Dr. Randy Scheibel on a VA Merit Review grant concerning functional MRI in Veterans who sustained mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) which is frequently complicated by posttraumatic stress disorder. Dr. Levin is also a partnering PI with Dr. Summer Ott and Dr. Pramod Dash on an NIH grant concerning biomarkers and brain imaging in high school athletes who have been cleared to return to play following a concussion. Other relevant experience includes his DoD funded research on the chronic effects of neurotrauma mild TBI. Dr. Levin is the recipient of a Distinguished Career Award by the International Neuropsychological Society. |
