POETRY: ‘Houston Push’

Contributed by: Mi-Miae Chong, accounting major
The push of a knife
through the night’s silence
interrupted by red and blue
sirens hunting death
the heavy words
of
blooded vows
muttered under breath
The greed of many poured
upon the ground seeding deception
and every bullet raced to meet the grave
met without exception
It is something humid, the heat of
a dangerous woman
ruthless pusher
speeding hammer
someone you get lost in.
There is a feeling too thick
about the weather in this city
it pushes down
as you pass buildings
hard like headstones
pushes as you walk
over cracks in the sidewalks
people spit on
like shallow graves.
