Free workshop guides high school seniors through university admissions

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s free Freshman Application Workshop breaks down the barriers of applying to college, with the next event set for Sept. 24, 10 a.m. – noon, in the Student Services and Classroom Building lecture hall, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.

Prospective students will tour University of Houston-Clear Lake’s unique campus as part of Freshman Application Workshop on Sept. 24, 10 a.m. - noon, at the Student Services and Classroom Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. Students and their families can also receive expert help as they fill out their ApplyTexas application.

The highlight of the workshop will be the opportunity to complete the ApplyTexas application with guidance from UH-Clear Lake admissions experts. UHCL will provide laptops so prospective freshmen and their families can fill out the application on site.

UHCL Office of Admissions Assistant Director – Special Events Tia Edwards said the Freshman Application Workshop is particularly helpful for students from underrepresented groups or who are the first in their family to attend college, though all high school seniors and their families are welcome to attend.

“This event is a great way to have someone tell you exactly what to do in ApplyTexas. In many cases, there are confusing questions, error messages and overall stress related to the college application process,” she said. “We want to take some of that burden off of families and walk with them through the process.”

Participating students are not required to bring anything, but they should provide official high school transcripts in school-sealed envelopes and the $45 application fee in check or money order if they plan to apply to UHCL that day.

During the event, campus tours led by current UHCL students will also provide an insider’s perspective on the university and help attendees decide if it’s a good fit for them.

Having the chance to ask questions of a current student provides valuable insight into the culture of the university, Edwards said.

“Staff and faculty members have a very different view of campus. So, while we are definitely a good source for the facts of campus, the ‘feel’ of campus will be better explained by the students,” she said. “Plus, current students know a lot of little tips for making a prospective student’s time here more efficient and fun.”

Freshman Application Workshop is one of a number of admission events offered throughout the fall for prospective students. For prospective freshmen, Hawk Premier on Nov. 12 is an open house designed specifically for them. For transfer and graduate students, UHCL’s Open House on Oct. 1, Admissions Preview on Nov. 17 and UHCL’s Pearland Open House on Nov. 5 will provide information on the university’s offerings. The next Campus Visit Day on Dec. 3 features campus tours and is open to everyone.
