Experience art, poetry, fiction at UHCL gallery events

Visit the University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Art Gallery to get a glimpse of Houston’s vibrant art scene in the new exhibition, “Reflecting/Reimagining: Selections from Glassell School of Art Studio School Faculty Members.” Glassell is the teaching institute of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Attend a preview reception Thursday, Jan. 19, 5-7 p.m. in the Bayou Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. Snacks and libations will be provided.

The eclectic exhibition features the works of 11 Glassell faculty artists: Lydia Bodnar-Balahutrak, Susan Budge, Sharon Dennard, Nathan Dube, Jeff Forster, Jan Harrell, Clara Hoag, Patrick Palmer, Mark Ponder, Christopher Wallace and Sandra Zilker.

UHCL Art Gallery Director Jeffrey Bowen said that the artists featured in the exhibition represent “a robust sampling of Houston’s dynamic art scene.” He added, “As educators, they also serve as a reminder of the myriad opportunities locally available to those who wish to hone their artistic skills.”

The exhibition runs through March 23. Entrance to the gallery is free, and temporary parking permits can be purchased in the Visitor Lot or Lot D.

Join featured artists in brown-bag luncheons at noon, beginning on Wednesday, Jan. 25 (with Jan Harrell and Chris Wallace); Monday, Jan. 30 (with Dube and Zilker); Tuesday, Jan. 31 (with Bodnar-Balahutrak and Hoag); Monday, Feb. 6 (with Forster); and Friday, Feb. 10 (with Budge and Palmer).

On Thursday, Feb. 23, 7-10 p.m., the UHCL Writing Center will host a public night of flash fiction and poetry inspired by the exhibition. Established and community writers will read new work in the atrium directly in front of the gallery’s glass walls. The event will feature readings by Joanna Eleftheriou, Dana Kroos and Adrienne Perry. Attendees will then have an opportunity to perform their own readings during an open-mic session.

“This exciting event will highlight the symbiosis and contagiousness of creativity,” said Conor Bracken, assistant director of the Writing Center. “Each reader will be reading work inspired by the artworks displayed in the gallery behind them. It’s not every day you get to see or hear how one creative impulse can reproduce itself in so many different forms.”

The art exhibition is funded in part by Lunar Rendezvous Festival. In-kind support is provided by Saint Arnold Brewing Company.
