Current and future university students are invited to explore education paths toward careers in geophysics in a presentation that kicks off the spring University of Houston-Clear Lake Physics Seminar Series.

The first lecture in the spring series is Monday, Jan. 30, 7-9 p.m., in room 1100 of the Student Services and Classroom Building on the UH-Clear Lake campus, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.

Fred Schroeder, senior geophysical adviser, renowned in the field of seismic stratigraphy and former prospector for ExxonMobil, will make students aware of career possibilities and encourage students to apply for a summer internship with Incorporated Research Institutes for Seismology. IRIS is primarily funded by the National Science Foundation.

“It is a wonderful opportunity to work with a world-class geophysics researcher from academia over the summer,” Schroeder said. “It will also give math and science students – physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science, IT, etc. – some food for thought about a career studying the Earth using geophysical methods.”

The lecture is free for those not pursuing continuing education credit, and $15 for those who desire to receive credit. For more information or to register, contact the Center for Educational Programs at 281-283-3530 or follow the “Seminars” link on www.uhcl.edu/physics.
