What do dirt, finance and the Parthenon have in common? They’re each topics of community courses on Jan. 27 as the University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Friday Morning Continuing Education winter series continues through March 3. Each Friday, lifetime learners can choose between three events to attend.

On. Jan. 27, 9-10:30 a.m., attend the presentation “It’s all about the Dirt: A Primer in Organic Gardening” to learn how to save money and restore the health of your soil. UHCL lecturer Wanalee Romero will introduce the basics of organic gardening and emphasize the importance of removing synthetic fertilizers, weed killers and pesticides from your gardening routine.

Then at 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., attend either “Empowering Women and Those Who Love Them” or “Tour of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece.”

In “Empowering Women,” certified financial planner Elizabeth Soto will offer financial guidance and life planning and explain how to confront financial challenges in a constructive manner. In the “Parthenon” lecture, Sarah Costello, UHCL professor of art history, will discuss the architectural and decorative aspects of this iconic structure and its historical importance to modern culture.

Attendees meet in the Garden Room of the Bayou Building on the UHCL campus, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. The cost to attend is a one-time $26 fall membership fee and an $18 course fee for each individual class, which includes course materials, borrowing privileges from UHCL’s Alfred R. Neumann Library, discounts from the UHCL bookstore and more. To learn more or to register for the class, visit www.uhcl.edu/continuing-education, or call 281-283-3033.
