Skating under the Houston stars at Discovery Green

Get ready to skate under the stars at Discovery Green’s new outdoor roller skating rink. Discovery Green will be opening Houston’s first outdoor Roller Rink this March, presented by Avienda Houston.

Discovery Green’s winter ice skating rink will become a roller skating rink for a limited time, March 3 to March 25, to give Houstonians another way to enjoy spring’s warmer weather.

“We wanted to bring something new, fresh and fun to the Houston community,” said Frida Adame, venue manager at Discovery Green. “To transform an ice rink to a roller rink seemed the right thing to do.”

The Roller Rink’s hours of operation will be as follows: Monday – Thursdays, 5 – 10 p.m.; Fridays, 5 – 11 p.m.; Saturdays and School Holidays*, 11 a.m. – 11 p.m.; and Sundays, 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. *School Holidays will be March 13 – March 17. Ticket prices are $12 per person on-site; $6 on Cheap Skate Nights, which are on Mondays, March 6 and March 20. Tickets include skate rental, but you may choose to bring your own four-wheel or in-line skates.

“I was thrilled when I heard Discovery Green was opening a skating rink,” said Ashley Hall, accounting major. “I think it’s a great idea that it is an outside event given that it is in March. I plan to bring some out-of-state friends during spring break to show them Discovery Green’s beautiful and artistic atmosphere.”

The rink is family friendly, welcoming people young and old to attend; however, skating in the rink is not a pet-friendly activity, so guests are asked to leave their four-legged family members at home.

Several special events are planned at the Roller Rink.

“We will have roller derby performances, and themed nights such as the 70s, 80s and 90s,” Adame said.

On Saturday, March 4, from 5 to 10 p.m., there will be a grand opening celebration featuring live music from the 50s to the 90s performed by Allen Oldies Band, Light Rock Express and the Xanadudes.

There will also be roller derby demo battles featuring local roller derby teams such as the Missfits Roller Derby, Houston Roller Derby, Yellow Rose Derby Girls and Southside Roller Derby.

A Rainbow and Roll is scheduled for Friday, March 17, from 7 to 10 p.m. Rainbow and Roll is a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) celebration hosted by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. Rainbow and Roll will feature performances by Crawford Nation’s Aria, Linda D., Alexia D., and Kris and Fidel performing as Janet Jackson, Beyonce and Destiny’s Child and Lady Gaga. This LGBTQ event was originally scheduled for December as Rainbow on ICE.

Because it is an outdoor venue, the Roller Rink may close during inclement weather conditions, such as rain.
