SGA meeting – March 7, 2017

CORRECTION: 3/9/17 – Dates for the SGA Executive Council application deadline and election day were corrected. Previous dates were reflective of the 2016 SGA election.

The meeting started with fund requests from student organizations.

  • Sigma Tau Delta requested funds to attend their first international convention. The convention will take place in Louisville, Kentucky March 28 through April 1.
  • Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) requested funds to host a “Tech Talk” every month within the semester. The presentations will be held in the Garden Room for approximately two hours and will be free for all students.
  • The Model Arab League requested funds for 16 students for their trip to nationals in Washington, D.C.
  • IEEE and the Model Arab League fund requests were approved.

The Executive Council gave their weekly reports.

  • They first reviewed the meeting J. Ward Martaindale held about the new buildings that will soon be coming to UHCL.
  • SGA will be taking a poll on changing the smoking policy at the March 21 meeting.
  • The deadline for the food drive has been extended to March 23 until 7 p.m. Donations can be dropped off at the SGA office.

The Executive Council also went over old business.

  • The deadline for applications for SGA Executive Council is March 10 at noon. Elections will take place March 21. The Executive Council then went discussed new business.

  • A proposal to change an amendment was announced. Currently, if a student is interested in applying for the Executive Council they need to have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. They would like to change it to a student must be in good standing. They would also like to no longer require students to be a student organization representative.

Student organizations gave their announcements.

  • The American Marketing Association will have a speaker meeting March 9 noon to 1 p.m. in the Student Organization Room.
  • Cancer Awareness Survivorship and Support is going to give Easter baskets to people going through chemo treatment. A small basket will be 10 dollars, a medium will be 15 dollars and a large will be 20 dollars. The baskets will be given to Harris County, Smith Clinic.
  • Pre-Health and Science Association (PHSA) will hold a MCAT workshop March 8 in Bayou Building 1435 at 1:30 p.m.
  • Campus Activities Board (CAB) will have badminton and volleyball games March 8 at the Student Services Classroom Building 3-5 p.m.

The meeting ended with general announcements.

  • The office of student diversity, equity and inclusion will celebrate Women’s HERstory month with events in March.
    • Women in activism panel will take place in the Bayou Building Garden Room March 8, 2-4 p.m.
    • Spoken Word Workshop will be in Bayou Building Forest Room March 21, 2-4 p.m.
    • Women’s and LGBT Health will be at the Bayou Building Atrium II March 28, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Career Services will have the Lights, Camera, Job Fair Workshop March 7, 3-4 p.m. in SSCB 3.109. Actors from The London Stage will be there to help prepare for the next job fair.
    • UHCL Majors and Minors (M&M) Fair will be March 30, 1-3 p.m. in Bayou Building Atrium I and II.
  • Orientation and New Student Programs will host midterms madness March 9 in Atrium I at noon. They will be at the basketball courts at 5 p.m. with snacks and drinks.
    • They will host family weekend March 31 – April 1. Dessert reception will take place March 31 at 7 p.m. and “Guardians of the Galaxy” will be shown outdoors at 8 p.m. Continental breakfast will be served April 1 at 10 a.m., a presentation by the faculty panel will be at 10:30 a.m. and the chili cook-off is at noon. Deadline for family weekend registration is March 22.
  • The deadline for Honor Societies commencement is March 3. Requests for honor cords are due March 30 at noon. Approval letters will be sent out April 3. The president’s roundtable will take place March 24 and April 14 in the Student Org. Room from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • SLICE will have a leadership workshop March 9, 5 to 7 p.m. in the Student Service Building Room 3306. Presenter Yolanda Barnes will host Why We Have Too Few Women Leaders.
