Old news and new news hash out their differences: Political cartoon

Old news and new news hash out their differences. In the era of fake news, perspective is everything. Cartoon by The Signal reporter Trey Blakely.

In the era of fake news, perspective is everything. The origins of this debate are not new – yellow journalism at the turn of the century turned the news into a political weapon, allowing private interests to elect officials, shut down businesses and even start wars.

In the current age of mobile journalism, and with the internet at our fingers, anyone with an audience can sway the public. Herein lies the great dilemma. Having an audience does not necessitate the statement of facts or accuracy.

Journalism exists because people have spent years of their lives studying it to make sure the information they present is as accurate as possible. Good news takes time – otherwise, it’s just telling stories with an agenda.
