In August 2018, UHCL’s new Campus Recreation and Wellness Center opened. This new building provides exercise equipment, various other amenities and has been useful in encouraging students to join assorted intramural sports teams around campus.

Intramural sports offered by Campus Recreation and Wellness, or being planned for, include:

  • Badminton (singles, doubles and mixed doubles)
  • Table Tennis (singles, doubles and mixed doubles)
  • Frisbee
  • Flag Football
  • Soccer (indoor or outdoor)
  • Volleyball (indoor)
  • Basketball
  • Dodgeball
  • NFL Pick’em
  • NCAA Bowl Mania

“All of our indoor sports are new, so indoor soccer, basketball, badminton, volleyball, and some fitness challenges are all new to UHCL,” said Brian Mills, director for campus recreation and wellness. “We will continue to utilize our space for as many events as possible in the coming semester.”

While the majority of intramural sports events offered at UHCL this semester have already occurred, there are still a few events available for registration.

  • Indoor soccer registration is open from Oct. 1 to Nov. 8 at noon
  • 6v6 dodgeball registration is open from Nov. 5 to Nov. 29 at noon
  • NCAA Bowl Mania registration is open from Nov. 19 to Dec. 13

Currently, NFL Pick’em is open and will last the entirety of NFL football season. Basketball has begun and the campus recreation has seen a large amount of intrigue in this sport in particular.

“Unfortunately due to the current weather, the Delta Field is not in good conditions,” said Diana Portales, marking and promotions graduate assistant for campus recreation and wellness. “Therefore, outdoor soccer has been converted into indoor soccer and flag football was canceled for the remaining of the semester.”

Current UHCL students automatically become a member upon the payment of their tuition. However, each student must log onto rwconnect.uhcl.edu and sign the required forms.

For all other members of the UHCL community, memberships can be purchased annually, by semester and monthly.

At this time, there are no plans for the university to begin participating in intercollegiate sports.

“We do currently have a couple of sport club teams that may begin to compete against other sport club teams in the future, but that is completely up to the clubs and it will take time to develop them to that level,” Mills said.
