SGA Recap: 4/6/2021

The April 6 SGA meeting began at 11:34 a.m. 

Bianca Schonberg, the executive director of education abroad discussed UHCL accident and sickness medical insurance and international accident and sickness medical insurance fee requests.  

Aaron Hart, the vice president for student affairs discussed the NACCC survey on racial climate. This survey is for UHCL undergraduate students. The deadline to complete this survey is May 11. 

Hiba Loya, SGA president, discussed the environment committee organization. The next meeting is April 12. If interested in helping with sustainability on campus, reach out to Loya. 

Student organizations voted on two propositions for the constitution. SGA discussed ways to work around quorum. Loya said there needs to be 27 student organizations to vote and 18 to pass constitutional amendments.  

The first proposition states a change in the GPA requirement from a 3.0 GPA to good academic standing. There were 22 votes on the first proposition. The second proposition states a change in that executive council members must be official SGA representatives. There were 20 votes on the second proposition. Both propositions passed and quorum was met. 

Mark Denney, the vice president of administration and finance discussed UHCL’s current declining plan for dining services. For more information, contact SGA or Denney. 

Loya said that there is an extension for the orientation leader applications. If interested in being an orientation leader, visit the Get Involved website. 

SGA is implementing a new open forum platform. Students can submit questions anonymously via a Google survey link. 

Brandon Woodcock, SGA vice president of outreach and communication discussed the domestic violence awareness event ‘Jesika’s Story’. This event is held April 9 at 9:30 a.m. via Zoom. For more information, visit the Get Involved website. 

Woodcock discussed balancing the badge event. The event includes an open table talk with law enforcement officers and students in the Greater Houston Area. This event is held April 13 from 5-6 p.m. via Zoom.

Brian Mills, the director of the campus recreation and wellness discussed Family Weekend. 

Molly Young, a doctoral intern for counseling services discussed one-on-one services, group services, drop-in outreaches and self-directed services. 

Additionally, there is an international student support group and a COVID-19 support group. 

Counseling Services is also holding a graduate student workshop series. 

There is a critical conversation virtual series. The first event is on consent and sexual violence happening April 13 from 12-1:30 p.m. The second event is on body diversity happening April 27. For more information on counseling services events, contact Amber Tempel. 

Alina Thomas, peer advisor for student involvement and leadership discussed the heart of a hawk champion cup. For more information, visit the Get Involved website.  

There are student leadership award opportunities on the Get Involved website. The deadline to submit names for these awards is April 14. 

There are leadership opportunities in the Campus Activities Board (CAB), The Hawk Spirit and Traditions Council (HSTC), the Mascot Program (MP), and the Student Government Association (SGA). For more information, visit the Get Involved website.
