Q&A: Empower: Women’s Leadership

Q: Can you tell us a bit about Empower and what it is your organization does?

A: Empower: Women’s Leadership is an organization that focuses around women in leadership. Our goal is to provide thoughtful discussions and resources that revolve around women’s leadership. Our mission is, “The Empower organization is an initiative to cultivate a brave space and resources to help support and empower diverse women in leadership.”

Q: The Women in Leadership series featured guest speakers from the UHCL community. What were some of the topics discussed, and will the series return next semester?

A: Some of the topics and guest speakers this fall semester were:

  • Family Roles vs. Feminism, speaker Erica Solis
  • Compromising with Yourself: Why it’s okay (and healthy) to not do everything, speaker Dr. Andrea Baldwin

We will not be returning with the same topics, but are looking to reach out to those in the UHCL community who could speak on subjects revolving around women’s leadership.

Q: What are some achievements and/or challenges Empower has had this year and how have they impacted the student org?

A: Empower attended its first conference this year. We took a group of seven to the Texas Conference for Women in Austin, Texas. We are hoping to continue attending conferences in the future.

Q: Who are some empowered women your organization finds fascinating

A: Empowerment can be a different fit for many women. The women who work around us to achieve goals for the greater community is what inspires the Empower leadership team.

Q: What are some 2019 projects/events the UHCL community can look forward to?

A: Spring 2019 brings Empower’s second HerStory Slam, an intimate evening where we invite female-identifying individuals to share an experience about being a woman. We will have thirty minutes of open mic after the Herstory Slam’s assigned speakers.

We are also partnering with UHCL counseling services to provide a Healthy Relationship workshop in February.
