LIST: A glimpse at UHCL professors’ published books

In addition to teaching, professors are also expected to publish and/or exhibit their research. The University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Neumann Library has a cabinet located by the main entrance that contains numerous books written by current professors of the university. The following list is a brief look at some of the books that have been published between 2016-2019.

I, too, agree with the comments from the women professors. Dr. Kim Case has edited, as well as contributed, to two excellent manuscripts of recent that should be highlighted in this article.

I am an alumna of UHCL, and to say I am disappointed in this article is a huge understatement. Not only are men represented as being grossly disproportionate in worth on this list with 8 of the 10 positions celebrating 4 male faculty, but the only book worth noting written by a female UHCL professor is a children’s book!? This is simply absurd.
Dr. Kim Case has a long history of supporting students at UHCL and has written multiple noteworthy books. Her work is routinely quoted in the required texts and reading materials assigned for the Master’s program I am completing in Colorado! How is it that the University of Colorado finds Dr. Case’s work to be more relevant than UHCL? I am beyond frustrated to see my alma mater perpetuating damaging gender stereotypes that reinforce the invisibility of women and devalue women’s contributions to academia.

This article makes it looks like women faculty at UHCL do not publish books. In fact, we do. And if you used the library display for ideas, we could critically analyze whether women are well-presented there. This type of under-reporting of women’s work renders us invisible and invalidates our scholarship. My most recent book was “Intersectional Pedagogy” published in 2017 by Routledge, a reputable Academic press (not self-published).

How come the only book authored by a woman on this list is a children’s book? And of the 8, 6 of then are by 3 (male) authors. The womxn faculty at UHCL have published numerous books and their hard work and effort needs to be acknowledged.

Am I correct in ascertaining that the only woman author on this list is the one who wrote a children’s book? Nothing wrong with children’s books, of course, but it’s an oversight that is painfully consistent with gender stereotypes. UHCL has plenty of women faculty who have written academic books during this time frame. Dr. Kim Case, for example. Can you add some of these?

I couldn’t help but notice that all of the books recognized here appear to be authored by men? I’m sure these are excellent works but I’m also sure there are women faculty on your campus who have published excellent scholarly texts in the last few years. Perhaps you could publish a follow up article next werk recognizing some of the great texts authored by women UHCL faculty?
