UHCL’s Hunter Hall to open fall 2019

Though University of Houston – Clear Lake has had on-campus living for years in the form of University Forest Apartments, UHCL is often referred to as a commuter school. This fall, UHCL will open its first residence hall, Hunter Hall.

Living on campus provides students with more than just a place to live. Campus living gives students the opportunity to enhance their overall college experience. UHCL’s newest “home away from home” spot, Hunter Hall, is expected to open in time for the fall 2019 semester.

Hunter Hall will provide UHCL students with a quick commute to class, on-campus dining and multiple nearby study spots, among many other benefits. UHCL plans to host many activities and events to help students connect with other residents and staff. Hunter Hall will provide its residents with a full-service front desk, laundry facilities, community lounge, Wi-Fi, computer kiosk and outside patio area among many other features. An artist’s sketch of what the interior will look like is available on the UHCL website.

The UHCL website also provides a digital sneak peek into the multiple room layouts. These layouts include a suite-style single room, suite-style double room and a single room with private bath. Though prices for these three rooms are subject to change, at this time they are priced between $4,305 and $4,700 per student, per semester. These prices account for electricity, water, Cable TV in the lounges, laundry facilities and high-speed internet.

All students living at Hunter Hall will be required to purchase a meal plan, which is currently priced at $700. Any students with dietary restrictions are encouraged to contact Campus Dining to accommodate their needs. Another add-on feature with Hunter Hall is the option to live on campus during their summer. This request will charge the resident a daily summer fee.

“UHCL is doing everything they can to provide Hunter Hall residents with the best overall campus experience, with living in Hunter Hall, our team will work hard to ensure students feel safe, included, and engaged in their university experience,” said Matthew Perry, director of student housing and residential life.

UHCL accepted applications for Resident Advisors, also known as RAs, March 18 through March 30. Perry said a Resident Advisor’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, “engage with students, hold students accountable, coordinate programs, among other administrative duties.”

“Resident Advisors will also serve as Campus Security Authorities, also known as CSA’s,” Perry said. “CSA individuals, who by virtue of the university responsibilities and under the Clergy Act, are designated to receive and report criminal incidents to Public Safety for annual security reporting.”

In addition to these responsibilities, RAs get to live in Hunter Hall free of cost during the duration of their employment with the University. Dean of Students, David Rachita said RAs become “multi-faceted very quickly.

“RAs learn to be conflict mediators, crisis mediators, counselors, coaches and cheerleaders, and develop a work ethic second to none,” Rachita said. “It was through those experiences that I decided to explore graduate degrees to become a Student Affairs Professional.”

Moving on campus can be a scary thing for college students, as well as their parents, Rachita said. This is why UHCL is hosting a “Move In Event.” This event will take place on Aug. 22, 2019. The Move In Event, hosted by the Hawk Welcome Crew, will welcome residential students and their parents to campus and provide them with the opportunity to greet and engage with students, staff, faculty and community volunteers.

“UHCL wants all of our residents to feel that they are at home away from home, and there is no better way of doing that than by having members of their new family assisting them at Move-In as they embark on this new adventure,” Rachita said.

Students interested in living at Hunter Hall are encouraged to complete a Housing Interest Form and Application as soon as possible. Students may apply to live on campus through the first day of fall 2019 classes.

For students needing any assistance throughout the housing process are encouraged to reach out to the Student Housing and Residential Life Office via housing@uhcl.edu or via phone at 281-283-2615.
