Staff Picks: Upcoming summer 2019 media and events

This summer is chock full of dozens of movies, television shows, concerts and album releases. These are the pop-culture related releases your Signal Staff are most looking forward to this summer!

I’m not sure if this movie is an original concept, but it is to me and I am so excited. “Yesterday” is about a global blackout resulting in the existence of The Beatles being wiped from history – except to a hardcore fan in the U.K., Jack. It isn’t super technical, but a fun ‘what if’ movie and in the trailer you see that two artist contest Jack’s originality when he reaches stardom.

I’m really looking forward to this album because I am a major fan and I am really intrigued by this new sound she has going on – it sounds like Taylor, but does not feel like her and I am hoping this album proves me wrong.

*Endgame spoilers* (but also if you haven’t watched it yet 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️)

Excited to see how the MCU is really wrapping up phase 3 since they said this was the official end and not Endgame. Also interested to see a post Tony Stark MCU.

All my life I have loved Jennifer Lopez. From her music to her movies to her shows, I am a J.Lo superfan and this will be the first time I’ll get to see her live in concert. Growing up, she was one of the very few Latinx celebrities who was a constant on television. She is one of the hardest working celebrities in the game and continues to prove she is more than just ‘Jenny From The Block.’

As a lifelong Lion King fan, to see this iconic film come to life with realistic looking animals is something I never thought I would see any time soon. With a great cast and even James Earl Jones returning as [the voice of] Mufasa, I’m looking forward to reliving the film that defined my meerkat-obsessed childhood.

I don’t like scary movies but my friends always want me to go see them, and this is supposed to be a scary movie 100% in daylight (so no dim/darkly lit jump scares), which I found intriguing. So I’m going to the premiere to see how many nightmares I can have in one night 🥴

Call Down the Hawk is the first novel of Stiefvater’s new series, The Dreamer Trilogy. The trilogy is the much anticipated sequel to Stiefvater’s popular series, The Raven Cycle. I was absolutely blown away by The Raven Cycle, when I read it back in spring 2016, so when Stiefvater announced that following August that she would be doing a sequel, I was overjoyed and have been anticipating it’s release, since. Scholastic released an official preview of Call Down the Hawk on June 6, and so far it is everything I hoped it would be. If you’re looking for intelligent urban fantasy with interesting and unique character dynamics and subtle and engaging trope subvertions, not to mention one of the most creative magic systems I’ve seen in a while, check out The Raven Cycle this summer and get caught up in the dream in time for Call Down the Hawk in November!

Invader Zim is one of my favorite childhood cartoons, and to see the original creator come back to make a movie for netflix is incredibly exciting. There hasn’t been anything new in the Invader Zim universe since the end of Season 2 in 2002. The new movie should be an exciting and fun visit back to a simpler and stranger time for all fans of the show! We’re all curious to see what kind of shenanigans Gir, Zim, Dib and other foes have gotten into.
