UHCL Campus Rec and Wellness Center introduces the ProClub Pass

The University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center is introducing a brand-new program created to offer a unique fitness experience. The ProClub program is designed for all UHCL community members to join; from the more experienced participants and to those who are just starting out their fitness and wellness journey.

The ProClub Pass offers three separate tiers for purchase with different classes available depending on which tier level is selected. The classes were designed to expand from the standard membership to give Rec Center members different, more intense experiences.

The idea of the classes is to be more vigorous and inspiring, to challenge those who decide to participate. The three tiers implemented into the program are as followed: Group Rowing Only tier, Boot Camps Only tier and Platinum Pass.

“The idea behind the program is to provide a quality fitness experience for everyone to enjoy,” said Bryce Starr, fitness and wellness coordinator.

The Group Rowing Only members will participate in rowing class formats and be granted access to the Tech Row gym, which allows members to use the brand-new rowing machines. With the new machines, the Rec Center is able to provide an exercise experience that combines technology and fitness in a different way. Starr describes the class as similar to playing a video game while exercising with the other participants.

Boot Camps Only pass grants its members access to the Rapid Fire and Xtreme classes and is available to purchase for $15. Rapid Fire combines their Battle Front and Tech Row classes. Boot Camps Only is essentially a cardio based endurance course combining all of the above classes.

Like the Group Rowing Only pass, the Boot Camps Only pass is available for $15. The Platinum Pass is available for $25 and grants members access to all group fitness courses.

Mohamed AbdelGilil, president of the Student Government Assocition, believes that the Rec Center is attempting to remain as inclusive as possible to appeal to the students of UHCL. AbdelGilil also acknowledges the fact that the Rec Center is an auxiliary operation, which means it is run by its own advisory board and needs to make revenue.

“In terms of the concept behind the ProClub Pass and the pricing that comes with it, I personally believe that you would not find these prices elsewhere no matter where you go,” AbdelGilil said.

Starr created the ProClub program to further help those with higher a focus or wanting more intense courses to achieve their fitness goals.

“ProClub is meant to be a more intense and focused course that allows the certified trainers to help the participants work on their personal goals,” Star said. “The capacity is one of the more significant focuses that enable the classes’ ability to achieve their goal.”

Starr explains that the standard classes offered at the Rec Center have a capacity of 15-20 people while the ProClub classes have a capacity of around 10 people. The low capacity allows certified instructors to work with the group at a more in-depth level, help them develop skills and motivate them toward their goal.

The classes are also offered throughout the day to fit the schedule for almost any student. Starr said this essentially allows members to create and shape a workout routine around their schedules, allowing for different kinds of experiences and workouts.

“Every day is different; you’ll never have the same exercise experience,” Starr said.

Personal Trainer Jackson Grosskopf is one of the certified instructors who will be leading classes included in the ProClub program. Grosskopf states the classes were designed and planned to be tougher, more intense functional workouts while attempting to serve both the more experienced fitness goers and the first-timers participating.

“We tried to remain inclusive so anyone can be a part of it,” GrossKopf said.
