BLOG: Super Bowl LIV performance embraces Latinx culture

From “Hips Don’t Lie” to “Let’s Get Loud,” the Super Bowl halftime show was filled with show-stopping performances by Jennifer Lopez and Shakira. This marked the first time two Latinx artists have headlined the annual event.

As a kid, I would listen to the music of Jennifer and Shakira, but also of Selena, Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera and Enrique Iglesias. These artists and so many more have inspired generations of Latinx people.

That is why this latest halftime show is less about the song selection, the clothing choices, and the stage setting. This performance was meant to show millions around the world who we are as a people.

Though our ancestors may come from various countries, we share a common dream of being respected, recognize and seen.

What Jennifer and Shakira did was demonstrate that it is okay to embrace one’s culture without shame. That it is okay to celebrate our differences while realizing that what unites us is a common dream.

In a time where families are being physically torn apart and placed in cages, a reminder of hope is needed. In a time where innocent people are being targeted and killed for daring to speak their native tongue, a reminder of perseverance is needed.

For some, this performance will be just a blip in their memory. For others, especially young children, this performance will be the fire that ignites their belief in themselves.
