RECAP: SGA meeting discusses committees and communication

The Student Government Association (SGA) meeting was hosted by Hiba Loya, the 2020-2021 President of SGA, on July 21 at 11:30 a.m.

  • The meeting began with Hiba Loya, president of SGA, announcing the fund request balance of $12,939.72. For new business, Loya announced that senate seats are available for all the colleges and if interested, students should apply on Get Involved. She also spoke about the upcoming town hall which will take place on Wednesday, July 29 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. 
  • No one from the Family Therapy Student Association showed to present. 
  • Matthew Perry, director of student housing, discussed precautions the staff at Hunter Hall will be taking for the fall semester. 
  • Additionally, there were two executive council reports from Misty Woods, vice president committee coordinator. Woods was unavailable to present so Loya presented the reports and mentioned that there are open positions in committees. She also mentioned that Woods will be in charge of the constitution and updating it.
  • Open forum began after the announcements. Katherine Schultz asked for tips on student organizations adapting to the online format for the semester was asked. Loya responded with increasing communication and using other platforms to meet if they have problems with Zoom, such as Microsoft Teams and Discord.
  • Patrick Cardenas, director of the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership, added that student organizations should take advantage of the features in Get Involved that facilitate communicating online. 
  • To close, Loya mentioned the next meeting will be on August 4, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. She asked students to register, RSVP and arrive 10 minutes early. She also said that in order to submit things, a form must be done through the SGA website by July 31, 2020 at 12 p.m.

Patrick Cardenas’ title is Director of the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership. The Office of Student Life’s name was changed in 2019 to Office of Student Involvement and Leadership.

CORRECTION 8/5/2020:

A student’s name was removed from the post because of a misunderstanding between individuals. The name has been replaced with “No one.”
