STAFF PICKS: Favorite songs of the summer 2020

Music can boost moods, reduce anxiety and bring comfort. It is a universal language that connects people around the world. There is a variety of artists and genres to enjoy and discover. The staff of The Signal picked their favorite song they have been listening to this summer.

Sleep at Night by The Chicks

I have been a diehard fan of The Chicks since I was 5, so I have been missing their music for quite a while. Their whole “Gaslighter” album is genius, but “Sleep at Night” is part old-school Chicks, part modern and very scathing. It’s just a good old “don’t mess with Natalie Maines” kind of jam.

Leaves and Lemons by Patty Gurdy

I love the positive energy this song brings in the morning and its just a great song to vibe and dance to while pruning and watering the garden. I think the plants like it too.

Sunday Best by Surfaces

This has been my go to pump up song this summer. It’s kind of a genre blender, so it gives you that fun upbeat pop feeling with a bit of soul behind it. I like to throw it on when I’m making my coffee in the morning and mentally preparing myself for the day!

Faith by The Weeknd

This song has been one of my many Weeknd summer jams because it has an amazing beat and lyrics that I find to be very relatable. As he laments about life and delivers amazing vocals, songs like this one show why The Weeknd continues to be one of the best singers (and overall artists) of our time.

Wildflowers by Elle Fanning

I went through a YouTube rabbit hole of Elle Fanning interviews and I stumbled upon this music video. I really like the upbeat tempo of this song with the pre-chorus and chorus. I have been listening to this song non-stop this summer, it has been on repeat while I do homework. I did not know that Elle Fanning sings. The music video shows off Elle’s bubbly personality and infectious smile.

Father Bird, Mother Bird by Khruangbin

This instrumental is a slow burner compared to other tracks on this album, but its laid back groove and lonesome guitar noodling make it a perfect stay at home soundtrack.

Do It by Chloe and Halle

I have been a big fan of their musical talent for a year or two now, but couldn’t vibe with the actual end product (songs) until this album. In their 2020 album “Ungodly Hour” they gave us track after track of refined talent, smooth beats and infinite replayability – with “Do It” being by absolute fav. Not gonna lie, it also came out first so I have loved it longer than the other tracks that came with the rest of the album this summer. I never get tired of this song.

-Alyssa Shotwell, Online Editor

It’s a fun song and I like to listen to it when I want to lift my mood. I’ve had their entire album “Ungodly Hour” on repeat since it came out.

Douce dame Jolie (Guillaume de Machaut) by Elthin

This song has a special place in my heart, as it was the first song I played through my first week of gardening. I feel like I’m in the company of a court minstrel while I tend to my plants.
