SGA proposed two ways to look at quorum

The March 23 SGA meeting began at 11:31 a.m.

Hiba Loya, SGA president, discussed quorum and proposed two ways to work around attendance issues.

One of the ways proposed is to have primary officers of student organizations submit the name of a member that will be present during the allotted voting time. The other way to work around quorum is to reduce the number of student organizations that are required at SGA meetings.

Loya asked student organizations which idea they preferred, and most of the organizations preferred the first idea.

Brandon Woodcock is the new SGA vice president of outreach and communication.

Patrick Cardenas, the director of student involvement and leadership, said that applications for the 2021-2022 SGA executive council are on the Get Involved website.

Loya discussed the green committee. This committee ensures sustainability on campus. If interested, reach out to SGA or Loya.

Aliya Beavers, the director of student diversity, equity and inclusion, talked about the race, equity, and inclusion work groups. If interested, reach out to Beavers.

Reggie Jones, the senior coordinator for alumni engagement talked about UHCL days of giving. The alumni association is hosting a blood drive April 7. The hawk pantry is accepting donations April 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and April 9 from 1-5 p.m. For more information, visit the Get Involved website.

Jones talked about the President’s Speaker Series: The Big Questions. The two events are April 9 and April 23.

Jones discussed the student alumni association. There is an alumni partnership meeting March 27 from 9-11 a.m. This event is hosted in-person and online via Zoom. If one wants to attend, reach out to the alumni association.

Alina Thomas, the peer advisor for student involvement and leadership discussed the leadership experience development series. Thomas also talked about The Big Event on April 10. The last day to register for The Big Event is April 2.

Open forum began. Many questioned UHCL’s decision to host a virtual-only commencement ceremony.

The meeting adjourned at 12:36 p.m.
