STAFF PICKS: Binge-worthy one seasoners on Netflix

Many Netflix shows encompass real-life events that many people can relate to. There is a variety of shows on Netflix. That way, every person can choose a show that they may like. The Signal staff picked their favorite one-season Netflix shows to binge-watch.

The Defenders (2017)

“The Defenders” is an amazing series that brought together the various Marvel Netflix heroes including “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” “Iron Fist” and my personal favorite, “Daredevil.” In this show, the heroes come together to defeat Alexandra Reid (portrayed by Sigourney Weaver), the leader behind an organization known as the Hand, in their pursuit to obtain immortality. In the process, the heroes build connections and become an Avengers-like team facing large stakes with their even larger personalities. If you’ve never watched a Marvel series on Netflix, I’d recommend starting with the first season of each character’s show and then watching them all come together in “The Defenders.”

V Wars (2019)

Okay, so this show isn’t good, but it is still extremely enjoyable. If you are like me and you only watch a few shows on repeat, this is the perfect show to watch instead of “The Vampire Diaries” for the 12th time. Ian Somerhalder (who starred in both shows) is actually fantastic in this role and his performance is enough reason to watch.

We Are The Wave (2019)

“We Are The Wave” is a German series about a group of teenagers who get together and take action against injustice and social issues. It brings a lot of attention to issues and different ideologies, which keeps you interested. It is also a mystery-type show so it always has you thinking about what’s next.

Ginny & Georgia (2021)

This show was super cute. I loved the background information on each character, but especially Georgia. Georgia is crazy, but I secretly love it. I also enjoy her relationship with her daughter, Ginny. This show exceeded all my expectations. Based off the ending of “Ginny & Georgia,” there has to be a second season.

Tuca & Bertie (2019)

“Tuca & Bertie” is a surreal-animated comedy about a pair of 30-year-old best friends/roommates. Tiffany Haddish voices a confident toucan (Tuca), and Ali Wong voices an anxious songbird (Bertie). I usually am not a fan of Haddish’s work, but this show knocks it out of the park. Also, since “The Walking Dead” and “Sorry To Bother You,” I will watch anything Steven Yuen has a significant role in. Yuen voices a robin who is dating Bertie. This show has one season because Netflix canceled, however after renewal campaigns emerged online, Adult Swim announced they picked it up for a season two coming in 2021. “Tuca & Bertie” strikes this odd balance of humor and outlandish situations while also capturing this weird phase of navigating early adulthood.

This wonderful one season Netflix show manages to paint a great picture of our society’s stance on race and other aspects of society. This story is about the events that unfold following the accidental death at the hands of a police officer will keep you interested while providing a tale of many tortured souls all affected in different ways by one death.
