IMO: UHCL offers good array of women’s resources on campus

For female students at UHCL, it is important to be aware of how the school prioritizes important matters such as women’s resources on campus. In a post-Roe v. Wade world, now more than ever, it should be the institution’s priority to allow female students to have access to certain resources and proper information about where they can access them.

Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, women across America are worried about what their future might look like. These trying times are scary and uncertain for many women, and that is why it is extremely important for the university to have the right resources available to women.

These resources could include feminine products in the bathrooms or counseling services and health services for female students. Thankfully, the university is on the right track with providing good resources. Seeing that the university takes time and effort to acknowledge that women should have access to these various resources is reassuring and will make students more comfortable pursuing their education here.

Health Services provides information on various health benefits female students have access to on campus, regardless if the student carries health insurance or not.

Health counseling with a registered nurse is available to all students with no associated charges. Pregnancy tests are available for students Monday to Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on a walk-in basis. This service does not require a physician visit. Students requesting pregnancy tests will receive a complimentary nursing consult and each test is $6 for students without insurance.

The Office of Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion has many resources for women, showing they do much for women at the university.

The office provides more physical resources such as their sexual health cabinet where there are menstrual products and other sexual health resources like condoms, lubricants and pregnancy tests.

The sexual health cabinet is a work in progress and will soon include more educational aspects to the cabinet to help educate fellow students about sex education and promote sexual positivity.

After gathering all this different information about women’s resources on campus, it is clear that UHCL is making leaps and bounds with improving these resources and creating safe spaces not just for women but all different communities.

The Office of Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion creates a safe space where all communities can go to feel comfortable having conversations with facility members about whatever they might be going through or need help with. They do their best to make sure oppressed communities feel included, safe and educated on important matters such as sexual education or sexual positivity.

Knowing that the university values women’s needs and respects that women should have access to special resources is crucial, especially since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. It is refreshing to see different departments such as Health Services or The Office of Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion making tremendous progress toward making a better future for their female student population.
