YOUR VOICE: The Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade

The Supreme Court recently released a ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a case which overturned the Roe v. Wade decision on abortion rights. The Signal is sharing your thoughts about the decision. The following submissions are presented in the order they were received and are unedited.

Erica Werner, Graduate Student: “The decision was based on the constitution, not religion, and I support the overturn.”

Anthony Kruse II, Business Management major: “I feel as if women should be the only individuals who make a decision about their own bodies. If they are going to have a child with a man to at least keep the man in the know about what is happening and to at least listen to the man’s opinions, but in the end of the day the woman carries the child for 9 months with the possibility of so many health variables that change the woman’s life and not the mans. It is a decision that should only be in the hands of a woman and not government or a male.”

Betsy Daltra, History major: “I think it is horrible. We claim this is the land of the free yet half the population do not have freedon over thier own bodies. This is simple a way to control the population and the lawmakers are using the so-called Christian church to do thier dirty work for them.”

Amber Kelly, Math with 7-12 certification major: “I am so grateful that Roe v. Wade got overturned. When the draft opinion got leaked, I prayed everyday that the decision would uphold to make Roe v. Wade unconstitutional and leave the decision of making abortion illegal up to the states. God performed a miracle when He answered the prayers of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, citizens in America. Life begins at conception and this ruling will save the lives of millions of babies all over the nation. It is a blessing that God moved in our nation in order to preserve the miracle of life.”

Kate Gaddis, alum: “As a Jewish woman I feel like I have no rights now.”

John Roy, Mechanical Engineering major: “I believe it is an excellent decision. A better decision would be to grant the unborn equal protection under the Constitution because they have just as much inherent value as any birthed human. We all bear the Image of God which means we should value and respect all human life at any stage development. The unborn are the most vulnerable whose voices cannot yet be heard. They deserve our protection and care. Do unto others…”

Meghan Coronado, Psychology major: “There aren’t enough words to express how devastating the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade is for everyone who has a uterus. Grave repercussions have already begun as a result of the SCOTUS decision. If it wasn’t clear before, abortion rights should have been protected from the start.”
