Information technology networking reception held
UHCL invites area informational technology students, alumni and community members to a networking reception for those in the field sponsored by the university’s Office of Career Services scheduled for April 15, 5 – 7 p.m. The reception will be held in the university’s Bayou Building, Atrium I and Garden Room.

Workshop to cover federal regulations
Get the solid, working knowledge on federal procurement at UHCL’s “Understanding the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR),” an intensive two-day workshop on the provisions that control the federal government’s purchase of supplies, construction and services. The workshop is scheduled for April 17 – 18, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., in the university’s Student Services and Classroom Building, Room 3307.

Created for anyone involved with federal procurement in government or industry, the course covers the acquisition process, including contract formation, simplified acquisition threshold, whistle-blower protections, small business and socioeconomic laws, commercial items, federal acquisition computer network and more. It will also cover FAR Part 15, which streamlined, reshaped and redefined how the government goes about its source selection process.

Government contracts consultant, certified public accountant and certified professional contracts manager Darrell J. Oyer leads the workshop.

This workshop is offered by the university’s Center for Advanced Management Programs and co-sponsored by National Contract Management Association Space City/Houston Chapter and approved for Continuing Professional Education credit through the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy. Course fee is $895 per person.

Exhibition highlights work of UHCL students
UHCL’s Art Gallery hosts the 2013 Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition juried by UHCL International Art Consortium member institution professors Bedrich Kocman, Jan Kocman and Michael Marshall, April 18 – May 16.

Admission is free in the gallery located in the Bayou Building.

This unique selection of works includes drawings, paintings, ceramics, prints, sculptures, textiles, photographs and digital media by either recent grads or those about to graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

An opening reception is scheduled for April 18, 5 – 7 p.m., in the gallery. Hours for the exhibition are Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m. – noon.

‘Mindful Leadership’ workshop open to all

Discover leadership success at UHCL’s workshop, “Mindful Leadership” March 25, 5 p.m. – 7 p.m., in the university’s Student Services and Classroom Building, Room 3311.

The speaker for this workshop will be David Zuniga, a psychology intern in UHCL’s Office of Career and Counseling Services. Zuniga studied mindfulness-based philosophy and meditation while earning a master’s degree at Harvard Divinity School.

Art School for Children and Young Adults announces summer session 

Register your budding Rembrandt or young Picasso now for UHCL’s Art School for Children and Young Adults summer session that runs June 10 – July 2. Students from ages 3 ½ through high school can participate. Registration is ongoing in the university’s Arbor Building, Rooms 155 and 156.

Open to all area students, including homeschoolers, classes provide encouraging instruction in multiple art mediums of clay, drawing and painting. Elementary students will study The Art of Transportation, in courses that will include viewing and creating art associated with various modes of transportation.

‘Promised Land’ part of Film & Speaker Series

What happens when a corporate salesman and his sales partner present an offer to a small town for their drilling rights? “Promised Land” shares the story of natural gas company rep Steve Butler and his sales partner Sue Thomason take up this cause and is presented by UHCL Film & Speaker Series April 13, 7 p.m., in the university’s Student Services and Classroom Building, Lecture Hall.

The rated R film was released last year and stars Matt Damon, John Krasinski, Frances McDormand and Hal Holbrook.
