UHCL Open Summer and Fall Pre-Registration

New and returning students can participate in open registration through May 13 for classes in the May mini-session (May 13 – 31) and through May 31 for the summer sessions, which begin June 3.

Pre-registration for fall runs through Aug. 23, with classes beginning Aug. 26.

Foreign Language and English Enhancement classes

Registration open for classes at various times and locations in the Bayou Building and Student Services and Classroom Building

Learning a foreign language or improving conversational English can enhance career goals and expand personal horizons. Register now for small group classes that meet for 90 minutes weekly for seven weeks to learn conversational English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish at beginner to advanced levels.

Registration is open until June 3, with summer classes beginning that week and running through July 19.

New student fees are $135 and returning students are $115. Private and semi private lessons are also available. Register online, by phone or in person. Art School for Children and Young Adults

UHCL’s Art School for Children and Young Adults is now holding registration for students from ages 3 ½ through high school for art classes from June 10 – July 2. Open to all area students, including homeschoolers, classes offer encouraging instruction in multiple art mediums of clay, drawing and painting. Elementary students will study The Art of Transportation, in courses that will include viewing and creating art associated with various modes of transportation.

Tuition ranges from $80-$115, depending on selected class, location and child’s age. Registration can be submitted in the university’s Arbor Building, rooms 1315.02 and 1315.03, Monday -Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m. – noon. Kids U summer 2013

Various dates and times in June and July, Arbor Building

Enhance your child’s learning with classes from Kids U, UHCL’s Center for Educational Programs that offers 90 classes created for children from pre-K to 12th grade. Classes for summer 2013 include: Early Childhood, Young Writers, Science, World Explorers, Math Camp, Technology, Brain Power, Language and Gifted Academy. Children get in-depth, hands-on learning experiences unique to each camp. Multi-age groups in limited-sized classes provide environments for amazing accomplishments.

2013 UHCL Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition

Juried by UHCL International Art Consortium member institution professors Bedrich Kocman and Jan Kocman and Michael Marshall, this selection of works includes drawings, paintings, ceramics, prints, sculptures, textiles, photographs and digital media.

This free exhibition and the artists-in-residence are funded through the Art Exhibitions, Office of University Advancement, Cultural Arts, and the Dean of the School of Human Sciences and Humanities.

Climate change on Texas coast topic of CLASP lecture

Raise your awareness on a timely topic at UHCL’s free lecture “Climate Change Impacts on the Texas Coast Area,” presented by Kohn B. Anderson, Maurice Ewing professor of Oceanography at Rice University. This Clear Lake Association of Senior Programs or CLASP “Visions In Our Midst” Distinguished Speaker Series event will be offered May 2, 5:30 – 7 p.m., in the university’s Bayou Building, Garden Room.

CLASP provides educational opportunities for area seniors and others interested in learning.  All are welcome to attend the free events. Program moderators are community leaders Sharon and Gordon Christman, Roemehl and John Dewey, Ron Lohec and Jim O’Malley.

CLASP offers lecture on Teen and Police Service Academy

All are invited to attend “Teen and Police Service Academy,” a free, educational lecture presented by UHCL Associate Professor of Criminology Everette Penn.

Clear Lake Association of Senior Programs is designed to provide educational opportunities for area seniors and others interested in learning through their “Visions in Our Midst” evening lecture series and the Daytime Speaker Series held at a variety of locations.

Program moderators are Yvonne and Russell Herring.

All ages are welcome. Admission is free, but registration is requested for all daytime speaker series events.

Community Cinema presents ‘The Revolutionary Optimists’

Learn more about one man’s quest to empower the impoverished children of Calcutta at Community Cinema presentation of “The Revolutionary Optimists,” May 3, 7 p.m., in the UHCL Student Services and Classroom Building, Lecture Hall.

The film follows Indian lawyer Amlan Ganguly, as he works to with the children in India through street theater, puppetry and dance. Three years in the making, the film shot in Kolkata, India, explores Ganguly’s efforts to help children as they battle poverty, transforming their neighborhoods with dramatic results. A qualified lawyer, Ganguly began his career as an apprentice to the most reputed criminal lawyer in Calcutta before leaving the practice of law to work on behalf of children.

Tickets are $3.75 per person. Community Cinema is a public education and civic engagement initiative featuring monthly film screenings and presented at UHCL through the Office of Student Life. Mercury to perform Beethoven’s 4th and 5th Symphonies

Experience classical music a new way as UHCL offers Mercury’s performance of Beethoven’s underappreciated Symphony No. 4 and the mammoth and iconic Symphony No. 5, May 9, 8 p.m., in the university’s Bayou Theater.

Presale tickets are available in the Office of Student Life for $12 general admission and $8 with UHCL ID. Tickets at the door will be $15 for the general public and $10 with UHCL ID.

UHCL Testing Services offers Quick THEA

Sign up now for the Quick THEA, the 5-hour test required for admission to Texas colleges and universities and teacher education programs. Registration deadline is May 10, 11:30 a.m. Fee is $20 for students, $30 for non-UHCL students at time of registration, plus a $29 institution fee at time of test. Scores are available in 4 to 5 business days.

The commencement ceremony will be held at noon for the Schools of Human Sciences and Humanities and the School of Science and Computer Engineering, featuring keynote speaker Professor of Psychology Dorothea Lerman.

Commencement for the School of Education and School of Business will be held at 5 p.m. and the speaker will be Professor of Bilingual and Multicultural Education Laurie Weaver.

Meet with success at Career Exploration Workshop

Embark on a new career path or get ahead on your current one by attending UHCL’s Career Exploration Workshop designed to help those seeking a career change, setting new career goals or returning to the work force.

This two-day workshop is hosted by university counselors and psychologists of Career and Counseling Services. Participants must attend both workshops.

Fee is $200 per person for the general public. UHCL students pay $30; UHCL alumni members pay $75; UHCL faculty and students attending other schools pay $100.
